Tropic Brew Guide: Cafetière

Tropic Brew Guide: Cafetière

The Cafetière, also known as a French press, is a classic brewing method cherished for its rich and full-bodied results. In the latest of our Tropic Brew Guide series, we explore the equipment needed, the recipe, and a step-by-step guide to mastering the art of brewing with a Cafetière.

Equipment Required:

Before we begin, ensure you have the following equipment for your Cafetière brewing experience:

  1. Cafetière: Purchase a high-quality Cafetière. A Cafetière consists of a glass or stainless steel carafe with a plunger and a fine mesh filter.

  2. Fresh Coffee Grounds: Choose Tropic Coffee's premium coffee beans that suit your taste preferences. Check out our Cafetière brewing collection here

  3. Kettle: Use a kettle to heat water. Opt for one with precise temperature control to achieve the ideal brewing temperature.

  4. Timer: Have a timer on hand, whether it's a dedicated device or a smartphone app, to help you track the brewing time accurately.

Recipe:

To get started with Cafetière brewing, follow this recipe as a starting point. You can tweak to your taste each time you brew:

  • Coffee: 60 grams (about 8 tablespoons) of medium-coarse ground coffee.
  • Water: 1 litre (34 fluid ounces) of water, heated to around 94°C (201°F).
  • Brew Time: 4 minutes.

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Heat the water: Boil water and let it cool for approximately 30 seconds to reach the ideal temperature of around 94°C (201°F).
  2. Preheat the Cafetière: Pour some hot water into the Cafetière to preheat it. Swirl the hot water around to warm the glass or steel carafe. Discard the preheating water.
  3. Add coffee and water: Add the ground coffee to the preheated Cafetière. Start a timer and slowly pour the hot water over the coffee grounds, ensuring all the grounds are fully saturated. Stir gently with a spoon to ensure even extraction.
  4. Steep and brew: Place the plunger on top of the Cafetière without pressing it down. Allow the coffee to steep for 4 minutes. This allows for the optimal extraction of flavours.
  5. Plunge and serve: After 4 minutes, gently press down the plunger, separating the coffee grounds from the brewed coffee. Pour the brewed coffee into your cup, ensuring you don't disturb the settled grounds at the bottom of the Cafetière.
  6. Enjoy and clean: Savour the rich flavours of your freshly brewed Cafetière coffee. Afterwards, empty the used coffee grounds into a compost or bin, and rinse the Cafetière thoroughly to remove any residue.
