Tropic Brew Guide: V60

Tropic Brew Guide: V60

Welcome to Tropic Coffee's guide to mastering the V60 brewing method. The V60 is a popular pour-over brewing device that allows coffee enthusiasts to unlock the delicate and nuanced flavours of specialty coffee. Let's get into it...

Equipment Required:

Before we embark on the V60 brewing journey, gather the following equipment:

  • Serving Vessel: You'll need a decanter or coffee server.

  • Coffee: Select premium coffee beans from Tropic Coffee that suit your preferences. Our Filter Coffee collection is perfect for V60 brewing.

  • Kettle: Maintaining the ideal water temperature is crucial for a successful pour-over. Ideally, you'd use a gooseneck kettle with precise temperature control, but if you don't have one, your standard Kettle will do the job.

  • Scale: Use a digital scale to measure your coffee and water accurately, ensuring a consistent brew and allowing you to experiment in future brews!

Recipe:

To get started with V60 brewing, follow this recipe as a foundation:

  • Coffee: 15g (about 3 tablespoons) of medium-ground coffee.
  • Water: 250ml (8.5 fluid ounces) of water, heated to around 92°C (198°F).
  • Brew Time: Approximately 2.5 to 3 minutes.

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Boil and preheat: Boil water and let it cool for about 30 seconds to reach the desired temperature of around 92°C (198°F). Preheat your V60 dripper and decanter by rinsing them with hot water. This helps maintain consistent water temperature during brewing.
  2. Measure: Weigh 15 grams of Tropic coffee beans. A medium consistency, similar to sea salt, is ideal.
  3. Add coffee grounds: Place the V60 dripper on top of the decanter or coffee server. Add the ground Tropic coffee to the dripper, ensuring an even bed of coffee.
  4. Bloom: Start the timer and pour twice the amount of water as the coffee grounds (30g) over the coffee in a circular motion. Allow the coffee to "bloom" for 30 seconds, enabling trapped gases to escape.
  5. Begin pouring: After the bloom, slowly pour the remaining water in a circular motion, starting from the centre and spiralling outward. Maintain a steady pour, keeping the water level consistent without touching the edges of the filter.
  6. Brew time: The entire brewing process should take around 2.5 to 3 minutes. Adjust your grind size or pour rate to achieve this target time.
  7. Enjoy: Once the brewing is complete, the coffee will have dripped into the decanter. Remove the V60 dripper, give the decanter a gentle swirl to homogenise the flavours, and pour the coffee into your favourite mug.
  8. Clean and repeat: Clean the V60 dripper and decanter, ready for your next V60 brew!

And that's it! With Tropic Coffee and a little practice, you can create a fantastic aromatic cup of coffee using the V60 pour-over kit. Enjoy!
